I've been a bit obsessed here lately trying to get ideas for my summer four season's swap. I've had three or four different directions and nothing seems to be working out. UGH. And possibly -- Help?!?
Anyway, in my search for things that are quintessentially "summer" -- I thought I would share some of my ideas that haven't suggested HOW to work themselves out into fabric.
Is this just an American thing or does tinny, loud music coming slowly down the street raise the heartbeat and excitement of children all over the world? Because you just KNOW this guy is coming down the street and your parents can be talked into a before dinner treat?
And that for just a couple of dollars (or less) there are choices to be made for a cool and refreshing treat.
Or that sitting on the back porch with your prize in hand and totally spoiling your dinner is a wonderful way to spend a lazy summer afternoon?
Of course, some of this idyllic splendor is done to the back drop of Eddie Murphy chanting "I got my ice cream" in my head...but I think that has to be part of being a child of the 80's.
There has to be a quilt in there someplace doesn't there? Please? Anyway, my fabric angst aside -- hope you've enjoyed a slice of my summer.

Ah, sumertime, summertime...backyard sprinklers, flying kites, staying up late to watch the stars and/or fireflies, county fair with its cotton candy and balloons, boat rides on the lake or grampa's pond, July 4th fireworks, picnics, watermelon. Quilter's Cache has lots of blocks for inspiration. I've seen ice cream cone blocks, kites, butterflies, canoes. HTH
OK child of the eighties, try this one on for size "I'm your ice cream man, stop me when I'm passing by.."
And though the shape of the vehicle may change, I do believe the loud, tinny music is universal.
How about fabrics that reflect the colors of ice cream?
Ah, one of the quintessential experiences of summer! That would be *fabulous* to somehow capture in fabric. I'm thinking Lazy Gal Tonya's free piecing techniques would work to create an ice cream truck... Then you could surround it with popsicles and Drumsticks and fudge bars and rockets and...
Your inspiration is there . . . just waiting to get out. I can feel it *s* Mmmmmm - dippy, yummy, cold Popsicles.
You naughty rabbit!!! I am going to be singing, "you got no icecream" and "you didn't get none"! all day now. I hadn't seen that for 20 years.
How appalled my children would be to hear "donkey' using that language! Hope you ate tours in a red leather suit....we have never had those kind of joys, which is why my kids get so excited when we holiday near shops!
I am hoping inspiration strikes me today on summer as well, Tracey
I think there's a quilt in there. But being another child of the 80s who also always gets Eddy murphy stuck in her head at the sound of an ice-cream van (I got some ICEcream, you didn't get none...icecream icecream icecream - wanna lick? psych!) I'd recommend staying away from the EM routine angle...
The sad part is that I also think of Eddie Murphy in that tight red leather suit too! Not really an image I want!
My girls have been patiently waiting for the ice cream truck to come back for a week now! Oh well - good luck getting your quilt together :)
Ah, yes! The ice cream man. I remember those days. My kids are the same.
Loved the ice cream man when I was a child. and fresh corn, and watermelon, and picnics...yum!
When I hear that noise I wanna go running down the street. LOL!!!
How about making a quilt with some of the food novelty fabrics? A couple of manufacturers have watermelon fabrics. There are many other foody fabrics out there.
Check out the 'cupcake' quilt I showed a bit back. I think you culd use its idea turned into an 'ice cream cones' quilt. I'm happy to accept partial royalities for your future quilt pattern ;)
I have seen a popsicles quilt - and an ice cream cone quilt. It was just several blocks showing the ice cream product - in a straight rectangular setting. Both looked wonderful and relatively easy to make.
You will come up with something very fitting. I know you will :) Can't wait to see it.
Happy Summer to you, nothing like the ice cream truck to be the perfect symbol.
I'm sure you've figured out your 4 seasons swap project by now (since I'm so late in coming to visit!), but I agree with the other commenters. Ice cream, ice cream, we all scream for ice cream!!!! We don't get the ice cream man in our neighborhood, darn it! I miss hearing the tinny music and seeing the excited kids line up for summer treats.
Sweetheart, precious, gorgeous! Have a I got your attention now?
I know you are spending a lovely summer chasing ice cream trucks but we love to know you are still alive..... and to see what you came up with. lol Tracey
